I finally decided to go to our local flea market today. "Jamie's" in Amherst Ohio is pretty well know. It's open on Wednesdays and Saturdays only. The morning was chilly and overcast and looked like rain. My friend started his new job working 11-7 AM shift so he said" let's go while I'm still awake". I usually don't like the crowds but Wednesdays are never as crowded. Most of the vendors were behind setting up waiting on the the weather. One table had this guy (or should I say Emperor ) just sitting in the middle with a few pieces on junk. I asked the the seller how much and he said one dollar ! Now I'm pretty sure this isn't real ivory. It's either resin, celluloid, or maybe even fish bone. Not even sure about the age but for a dollar...heck yeah ! He's 7 1/2" tall and very intricately carved. Surely one of a pair (an Empress as well) from what I've seen online. He has a bit of damage. The spire is broken from his hat and a bit of finger is missing. There's a small nick in the base. The bottom has a very elaborate mark which I've seen online on a similar piece on Ebay, but there was no info as to what it translates to. Still I think he's awesome. Guess I'll start hitting the flea market again after all these years. -Mike-
Thanks Ken :)
A calm and happy Emporer to rule your home! (and a cheap one)
Thanks Karen :).... Yes, he does look rather pleased with himself...lol
Mike, the bottom translates Qian Long, emperor of china 1735-1796. Hope this helps! George
Thanks George :).... Mystery solved. That seems to be the common translation for the marks on these pieces whether they are ivory or not. A few of the auctions sites say the same thing even if the mark is written differently. Qianlong period make or style. I don't think this is that old though. Vintage at most. -Mike-
I got a buck worth of pleasure just reading about your adventure...spread your hunting wings! Cool find!
Thanks Amber:).... there's always so much stuff there I want though and it tends to be expensive. There was a guy with paintings and sculptures I would die for. Particularly an art deco bronze. He wanted a hundred for one of the paintings so I didn't even ask about the bronze. I might go back Saturday just to torture myself...lol
Sa-weet find Mike. I think you find good stuff wherever you go. It's cuz you love it :)
Thanks shareurpassion :)
