Have searched a ton & can't find anything like this trunk, with this inside. Please help! :)
dimensions (approx.): 36" wide x 26" tall x 21" deep
This trunk is really heavy weight wise, leather straps on sides gone, interior is in fairly good condition, original paper coated covered trays inside. One pic is of the label on the outside of tray. There are small leather straps to keep the tray closed. The outside is in fairly good condition except for top, which appears to have some water damage.
Thanks for any advise on what it is & what it's worth!!
1900s to 30s flat top metal steamer trunk with an attached fold up top tray with cover( I'm sure there is a patent there somewhere). Nothing really special here. The medallion with" Sic Semper Tyrannis " (meaning Thus always to tyrants/sometimes mis translated to" Death to tyrants" It could either be the image of Marcus Junis Brutus assassinating Julius Ceasar or "Virtue" -(since the picture appears to have breasts on the top figure doing the slaying) of tyranny. This is the state flag of Virginia and the motto of Allentown Pa.(wikapedia -source)
This trunk might have or not, been made in either state. Although I am leaning towards Pa. The 3 ply Veneer construction( lingo) appears to have a Dutch translation(Lot of Pennsylvania Dutch out there) . Just using a little scientific wild Ass Guessing though,Maybe this will help a little. good luck and welcome to the site.
The trunk is a fiber covered travel trunk from the 1920's or later. Once again, a Steamer trunk or Cabin trunk was a trunk that is no taller than 14". The interior tray is what was called an automatic tray trunk.
