In spite of the fact that all things are hot right now for Mid Century Modern, let me sing a few words of praise for the not new, not trendy, not modern, but the lovely antique porcelain pieces of yester-year. I'm especially fond of pieces that come with a story- this one is in the possession of a friend, who inherited it from her mother, who enjoyed it from her mother, gifted from another relative. The curves display a botanical flourish, employed by the craftman in honor of Mother Nature. Delicately hand painted, floral blooms in a textured 3-D against the smooth brightly white porcelain, and enhanced with gold leaf, truly a gilt-y pleasure!
Friend shares the history- family was from Germany, and transplanted to San Diego, California where the great grandfather made his fortune in real estate. The house was decorated in proud display of new found wealth, with objects such as this Royal Bonn vase, also hailing from Germany, and was a celebration of the family mobility, it being expensive to procure in its day. It was a costly treasure to be admired, remarked upon, and now a wonderful reminder of the giver, for the grateful grand daughter.
"I loved looking a my grandmother's things, and the stories my mother would tell about her memories growing up. It reminds me of my grandma to this day, I can hear her voice whenever we use the vase for a freshly cut flower."
