MODEL 1874 US ARMY MESS KIT OR MEAT CAN: The standard issue mess equipment for the Indian War soldier from 1874 into the 1890’s, the Model 1874 Mess Kit, or as referred to in the language of the time, Meat Can, was a necessary piece of equipment for every soldier, providing him with both a plate and frying pan.
complete with US marked Spoon, Knife, Fork and a tin drinking cup, the US marked M1874 spoon is very rare and hard to find. This type of mess kit would have also been used during the Spanish American War circa 1898
I'm impressed. Forgotten facets of history.
Great post.
Nice! I have a spoon much like this that is marked 1916 from the Rock Island Arsenal.
Great one!!
thanks, the spoons are not as common, probably because they were the most used eating utensils, I have a 1916 dated fork mfg by RIA and it still looks bright & shiny.
