I debated on whether to post this here, but this spectacular vase deserves to be remembered. Let's start with the bad news - it is no more. The clerk at the antiques shop where I bought it put it in a paper bag with twine handles. Since it weighed upwards of six pounds, guess what happened - when she picked it up, the handle broke, and it hit the ground and was lost forever. We hadn't even finished writing the check. I won't get into the aftermath - it ended as equitably as it should have under the circumstances, but the disappointment lingers - truly, the piece that got away.
This vase (not one like it... this exact vase) was featured on Plate 168 of Moser Artistic Glass, Edition Two, by Gary Baldwin. It was, after all, Mr. Baldwin's booth at the antiques shop where I found it. From a series of rough and deeply acid-carved vases designed by Hussmann, these were very expensive to produce. They date to the very beginnings of the art deco period. The stylized fish decoration on this vase was even more spectacular in person. The base was polished, with ground and polished pontil mark, where the designer's "HH" monogram was signed.
Part of me wants to go out and find another... but vases like this, due to the production methods used, are truly one of a kind.

Shame that piece of art lasted almost 100 years to meet the tragic death of a 25 cent paper bag :(

Oh no! I did one of my agreed upon flea markets to prevent hoarding this weekend. For the first time I had a customer break a piece. She paid for it willingly but I only charged her a small fraction but I felt bad.

Oh my, I'm disappointed for you...can't even imagine that moment. What a bummer. It was gorgeous and it had all of the provenance, too. What a shame.

Nothing more frustrating than a pice so beautiful lasts all those years only to be lost in a second of lack thoughtfulness....sad!

I know this post has been up for a while, but we moved my grandmother into an assisted living. My father was going to give several boxes to Goodwill. I told him i would take the boxes because i might find some things i want. Well.... I pulled out an amber carved glass vase with the mark of Heinrich Huffman. It was my great grandmothers. She was an antiques dealer. If you see this, maybe you can look at it and tell me a little about it. I know it isn't a fake. This is the most beautiful vase i have ever seen in perfect condition. It would be hard to break this sucker. Let me know if you can help me. I just registered on this site because i read your sad article. Thanks and sorry for your loss
