I believe if you do some research you will find out this is a ladies cuspidor. Yes, women did quite frequently chew.
there is as very similar one at wrinkl;edwillietreasures.com....that's why I believe this
is a salesmans sample.....
but thanks I will looks at ladies cuspidors..and see whats up !
You are correct, there is one on that link claiming to be a salesman's sample. However, there is no authentication. Everything is pure speculation and assumptions because of the size. I sold my collection about 12 years ago and through my research salesmen did not carry miniature samples. They carried the actual item and sold it on the spot. If you research ladies cuspidors you will find that they are small because ladies carried them when they went to the theater, out for a Sunday drive etc. They were small and easy to conceal. There were also replicas made for display as recently as late 1970's. The felt buttons on this item would never have been on an original. A positive point is that while the photo is dark and hard to see, it appears to have been hand filed as opposed to rotary ground. That may sound like a small point but it can make a major difference in age and being a reproduction.
I am not being rude....I am simply telling you what I see from the pictures supplied.
I think someone recently added the felt...to protect their table.....I know it was not original felt.....bottom looks hand filed....any ideas on when this was made? thanks all !!
It was filed but the marks go in opposite directions. I have a very good idea when it was made but you wouldn't be pleased.
