This is an original Alexander stone lithograph from my private collection of Magic posters ca. 1910 One of the more stylized elements in most of Alexander's posters is his use of Black backgrounds as shown in this poster. The use of blacks and reds create a more striking and powerful image.
Perhaps the most unique element in this particular poster is the image within his crystal ball. Images of Birth, Marriage, and Death all portray Alexander's power to see, know, and tell one's complete life span!
This is a panel sized poster measuring approximately 14" x 41" and is in EXCELLENT condition. This is one of the more scarce Alexander posters to come by.
Claude "Alexander" Conlin was perhaps the most successful professional theatrical mind reader of his generation. He made millions of dollars performing on the grandest vaudeville stages - nearly $240,000. in 1924 alone and retired at age 47.
Alexander admitted to killing four men, was married seven times, occasionally to more than one woman at a time, spent time in jails and prisons around the U.S. and counted some of the greatest magicians of his time as his close friends.
stunning my friend!!!
Thanks SEAN68, LOVE this poster myself!
Thank you for the compliment valentino97, it is much appreciated and I am glad you like the poster.
To answer your question yes, I tuned IN for the first episode of Houdini and tuned OUT for the second night's episode simply because the movie BLEW! Half the story was FICTIONALIZED and the rest of what I saw was just plane BORING! When the Art Direction is better than the story, you know there is a problem! Perhaps the BIGGEST problem was that they made the movie with the intention of releasing it theatrically, however in the end the movie proved to be such a disappointment that only a cable channel wound up buying it! Just a guess, but I have a hunch I am correct. That's my $.02
Its amazing, such a power!
I think his posters and lithographs were important part in his success.
Thanks for share!
Virginia.vintage, always nice to hear from you girl, thanks for the comment. So glad you love this poster and appreciate it! Hope you are well:)
Your very welcome zguyz!!
valentino97, again I agree with the production value of the film and the well executed art direction (Props, set dressings, recreated posters without Houdini's face on them, apparatus, etc.) however the film was certainly fictionalized in MANY ways, but this is what Hollywood does. Unfortunately I cannot recommend a better Houdini film since there is not one that has come out yet, the older ones are too dated and a bit cheesy (Paul Micheal Glazer & Tony Curtis versions) but perhaps some day there will be a better version that is both true and entertaining.
However the Magician that actually has a BETTER story in my opinion, and one that is filled with more drama than Hollywood could ever dream of is the story of Alexander! The Alexander which this very poster above was based on. His story will blow everyone's mind!
valentino97, you are most welcome for the information. I am a Magic historian, so any future information you may need, feel free to contact me as I am always willing to help.
The BEST book on Alexander in my opinion, is called "Alexander The Man Who Knows" written by David Charvet. This book is a very fast read filled with great photographs and images of his posters. You will NOT want to put this book down! For sure one of the most interesting and enjoyable books on Magicians I have ever read!! Alexander's story will simply blow you away! This book might be out of print, like most Magic books, but I think nnmagic.com
has some copies for sale still on their website. Also check ebay as this book does surface from time to time for sale. Hope you enjoy it!
Yes, "Alexander The Man Who Knows" written by David Charvet, is a great read. Excellent!
I have been trying to find this poster in unrestored condition. Anyone have a lead for me?
