this is the best find i've had at Goodwill, ever! it cost me $4 and i've been looking for a good one for years. and this one is a GREAT one! look at the beautiful eyes and details which look tattooed on! these pieces are truly burnished pieces, not like the stuff made today. most of today's stuff has fake burnishing. this is one of the best face banks i've seen. yay!! i wouldn't be surprised if someone can tell me who the artist was, even though it isn't signed.

Hey there ho2, I was doing my "research" for the last 4 hours on a mirror I'm about to post and this piece of yours came up. Did you ever find out exactly who made it? I'm coming up with Jorge Wilmot and Ken Edwards on these lovely faces. Forgive me if I'm too far off on your piece with my attachments and BTW you have great stuff!! So here ya go:

      thank you very much OneGoodFind!

whereas there are only a very few potters who are regularly recognized and named in Mexico, the head pieces like these are not. these would simply be listed as 'Tonala Burnished Head Bank' or Tonala. Ken Edwards pieces are everywhere and his style is easily recognizable, and ditto for Jorge Wilmot. But they go against the grain a bit for traditional Mexican pottery which is almost always anonymous. There are [and were] so many amazing potters in Mexico's past, and after trying to figure out who did some of the pieces i've come across for years, i've given up hope of knowing their names.

I am not into the newer colors and methods, although admittedly your piece has a great face, as I am more into the traditional canelo (cinnamon colors) and slip glazes… BUT I am seriously impressed by the tribal banding on the back...somebody went old school on that thing. Very Nice!!!
