This is a thrift store find....Wooden barrel, wooden stand, cast iron wheels.
My first assumption was wine press, due to the wheels.
Then I saw a butter churn, NO WHEELS!

    What exactly is it?

Possibly Chippenham or repro, made in England originally.

I did a little more research on this piece and I found out that this is a butter churn....made in 1890 by J.Mcdermaid. Its also listed in the 1894 Sears and Roebuck catalog. This type of churn could be ordered then with or without the pulley, depending on the size of the barrel....Back then people used lambs and dogs on a treadmill attached to churns pully to flip the barrel at a certain pace. thank-you for your input...it encouraged me to learn more about the history of churns! ?:-

I keep bringing home different types of churns and presses and really like this one! Great find, especially at a thrift store.
