Hi folks,
My knowledge of collectable coins is very limited, but I have just finished going through a huge jar of old pennies, and ran across this 1940-S Wheat cent with CVG stamped on it. Does this have any known significance?
I found this huge jar of pennies in my 85 year old mother’s basement and have organized them into penny rolls. I’ve found:
One Indian head (1907)
Over 200 wheat cents (including eight steel cents)
Over 3,300 1959-81 cents (when they were still 95% copper)
Over 850 post-1981 cents (now that they are mostly zinc)
Over 200 Canadian pennies, mostly QE2, but some George VI.
All in well circulated condition, of course.
Lots of fun sorting while spending quality time with mom watching CSI.
If aghcollect doesn't know I don't think anyone does.
Looks like you got an instant collection.
I think someone just stamped their initials on the back of a penny with a letter punch. You can even see the damage to the face from the striking pressure.
All righty then, I'll just put this with the other wheats. I'm thinking about keeping all the pennies up to 1981, plus one penny for each year and mint after that year, and then cashing in the remainder of the post-1981 cents.
Greg Brunk published a really good book about counter marks on US coins but I suspect this one may be too modern and unknown.
