    Breweriana…
    (70 items)

Here is a Reading Premium Beer check-out mat that I found at a local flea market. It was made to advertising Reading Premium Beer from the Reading Brewing Company located in Reading, PA. The slogan on the bottom that reads "The Friendly Beer For Modern People" was used during the late 1950's in an effort to revitalize the brand to a more hipper vibe.

This mat would have been used at a check-out counter most likely in an old beer distributor. It is made of thick plastic overtop of cardboard and foam; and measures about 22" X 16".

I've only seen a few of these mats before in other collections but never one in such good condition. I've very happy to add this one to my collection.

I believe it was mostly distributed in PA and maybe a few surrounding states. I have found various kinds of breweriana in New Jersey, Maryland and as far as Vermont. I know it wasn't a national brand, that's part of the reason they closed in the 1970's because they couldn't compete with the big beer companies. Thanks for looking and the comment nutsabotas6.

Yes, in 1971, Schaefer opened it's last brewery in Fogelsville, which really killed Reading's market. That slogan is much older than the 1970's, 1958.

That's write it was 1958, for some reason I must have got the timeline confused with when the brewery went under in 1976. Thanks for the correction TubeAmp.
