Just picked this up today at a yard sale and love it! The entire body is pressed/laminated wood, kind of like bow limbs. The seat and entire structural components are what appear to be wooden dowels from one end to the other. Has anyone seen one of these? Any idea of a maker for it? There are no markings on it that I can find. The gentleman I purchased it from said it's at least 40 years old but knew nothing else about it.
Thanks for the help!
I never happened to see one of these that were all dowels. Back in the 1970's when macrame was the big thing I saw these in a kit but rather than all dowels it was mostly rope. They had dowels at stress points but you had to weave the back and seat side to side. My ex wife did that stuff and there was always a mile of rope to trip on laying around.
It's all wood and each of the dowels have dowels through them holding then in place as well. It's quite an impressive piece, in my opinion.
Any chance it's a custom build? I'd love to know what something like this cost someone...
The dowels that hold the dowels are called pins. Having all wood construction allows the wood to expand and contract without splitting when temp and humidity changes. Screws, nails and glue all tend to inhibit the wood's ability to breathe (move) and result in cracking and splitting. Very time consuming process but superior construction. This is not the place for cost but try getting someone to build it today. When you see the estimate you will head for Walmart.
The same kid seen sitting in it was the one to bring it to an end. He rocked too far back and both sides broke when it hit the floor... not my happiest moment. Oh well, you win some you lose some
