This axe head was owned by my late grandmother and I believe it was used by her second husband, Art Longstaff, a logger in Oregon and Northern California in the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's. I am trying to find some history on the company, ClearCut. I replace the old, bent/bowed handle with a new DoIt handle. Since my family goes back to 1850's in the Hopland, California area this blade may be from my grandmother's side of the family. Anyone with any info on the company or who can send me in the right direction, your help would be appreciated.
CleanCut was a brand of the DCH Company. The full company name was Dunham, Carrigan, & Hayden, San Francisco
Thanks, that is what the DCH brand at top means. Any idea of what appears to be a dollar sign at the bottom means?
That is an S over F - for San Francisco
Thanks again for all the help.
Looks like a felling axe. Your picture #1 makes it look like the right side has seen damage. That is probably not the case. The cutting edges were ground at different angles so one tool did two different jobs. Long time since I used one, chain saw is easier now......especially if the wife is running it.
I may get her a new splitting maul if she does a good job.
Gotta take care of your woman.
Figured it was a felling axe based on family history. No damage to the blade, just poor photography on my part.
