      most of these long keys were off rim surface door locks the ones before the introduction of the modern mortise locks that are rebated in to a door the reason they were so long was if it was on a strong room or main door it would have to be long enough to pass through the door from opposite side where lock was mounted on the door some of these doors would have been over 4 inch thick
