Sometimes as collectors we stumble across pieces that for some reason fall into our laps for much less than their worth.

    This is one.

Hiroshi Yamano (1956-) has been working with glass since 1975. The medium drew Yamano in after he saw an exhibition of Scandinavian glass in Kyoto. Before he started to study glass extensively, Yamano took some time and traveled through Europe. He then studied at prestigious schools throughout the United States and Japan and received his Masters in Fine Arts from Rochester Institute of Technology.

Though he has received numerous awards, one of the more notable ones was The Rakow Commission from The Corning Museum of Glass,an annual award given to a leading glass artist, which was given to him in 1991.

Yamano was an instructor at Pilchuck Glass School five times between 1991 and 2005, and has instructed and lectured at many other international schools and organizations.

To Yamano, the glass vessel can be sculptural and beautiful, as well as functional. He also tends to incorporate both the interior and exterior of the piece, and often he finds a way of incorporating fish into his glasswork.

This perfume bottle is part of a series of pieces he made with similar construction, and I believe (but have not confirmed) they were made in the early 2000s.
The pictures speak for themselves. Size: 10cm

The last picture is a sample of his recent work, "Scenes from Japan".

      Great concept. I love it.

I should write down the names of japanese glass artists and go to the Art Glass Museum near Madrid (the MAVA). I'm sure there will be some of the pieces from a few of them (the first part of the collection was a donation from a Japanese lady)

Austro I would love to go there with you!
I have found out about so many amazing artists and would love to see their work. Somehow they do different things with glass than others.

      Eye ...yes......thank you.

Thank you STT, Peggy, Lisa and Mankin. I am still constantly looking at it and into it.

here's a link to the page on the MAVA's site with a list of ther artists having some piece in the museum's permannet collection... There are less Japanese artists than I thought, but still, I think it's a nice list. No hiroshi Yamano, though :(

Stunning! Where do you get this stuff?

MAVA looks like a great museum.... I couldn't navigate to their permanent collection here on the Galaxy. I will try later on the PC.
      Thank you Austro.

Thank you too cobalt! I have taken to sourcing my Japanese glass from Japan.
It can be a bit hit and miss at times and costs a lot generally with agent and post fees, but it's the only way I can get it!

What an amazing piece. What a find. And everyone who has said you look at it and see different things or you just feel you keep on having to look at it, these are too ppl who appreciate what glass is about.
Whether it be a piece of fine glass or an artists first few pieces, if the artist is good, we as the viewers are treated to a great privilege. This one is no exception. I could look at both pieces 20 times and over and you see something different each time.

What a beautiful bottle..was it a dressing set bottle that the perfume was poured in to or a bottle the perfume maker used, makes you wonder...but quirky and unique..just wonderful...I love the one with the bird...beautiful...the detail and story in that one, fantastic..
