My friend was working on an old brick building in Los Angeles and found this unusual item under the flooring, looks very old. Does anyone know what this might be?

Your item to me looks like a handle for what is called a sad iron for ironing cloths . The iron was sat on the stove to heat then the hangle was clamped on to do the ironing .
