This is my mid 1800 leather gold rush trunk, or so I think that's the period it's from (it may be even older). It's 100% original and intact, including the handles. The leather straps are missing, but the original buckles remain. The leather is heavily embossed, but due to 150+ years of aging, doesn't show up well. The interior is fabric lined and all there. A lot of the leather had peeled away from the sides (but was all there) and I had to take leather stitch and reattach it. Other than that, all I had to do was clean it with glycerin saddle soap and condition the leather. This trunk has been one of my favorites for a long time.
Another stunning trunk jscott -- the condition for its age is marvelous. So often those front tabs are long gone. The interior is really great as well. It almost looks like a soft top trunk -- is there a wooden frame around the entire top lid -- if not it was meant to be stuffed (with laundry/linen) and used as a seat. I will throw up one of mine as an example because the interior is similar. Either way truly nice piece.
Wonderful to see this trunk in such fine condition all around.Love it,wish it could talk.
Thanks Trunkman!! This is a wood body trunk with a VERY thick leather covering. I usually see these with the leather stripped off and the wood refinished. So, when I found this one, way back when, it looked pretty bad with the leather detaching. Though the leather had began to detach, I knew right away what I had and jumped at the chance to buy it. With a lot of cleaning, leather stitch glue and a lot of patience, it came to back to life. The best part is that I have the original key and it works quite well!!
Thanks Drill!! I wish it all of my trunks could tell their story. Talk about a true history lesson!!

Yep Thomas, it most certainly was my 4th post. That particular trunk found a new home this past January. In fact, I've sold off a large majority of my trunk collection, retaining only the rare and unique ones for myself.
