This is the second of the set I purchased from the same person. Also paid $5 for this one. This one is probably in the worst condition of all the ones I have, so it's also the one I would consider trying to restore.
I don't really know if they have any present or future value so I'm torn between leaving it as it is or fixing it up so it has more aesthetic appeal for room decor. Right now it's out in the workshop attic because it smells so bad when it's opened!
I have taken the canvas off of these and been very pleased with the results... particularly when the canvas is all ratty -- they clean up nicely.
Kydur, I love these old European trunks.
Thanks T-Man and Scott. Any advice on how to restore the bend in the middle wood slats? It's become misshapen probably due to lots of stuff being piled on top of it during its life and travels (prior to me). I was thinking I would maybe use some heavy duty pipe clamps to pull them back into shape combined with steam (from a kettle?) but I'm thinking the steam may also adversely affect the canvas and whatever (cardboard?) is underneath.
For the price paid it's not the end of the world if my experimentation causes further damage but it would also sure be nice to get some restored results like what I'm seeing from you guys!
