Here is a ceramic oxen cow planter. I have never seen one like it. It has in black ink, made in Japan. Just look at it. Seems hideous but somehow loveable. It measures 9" long, 4" wide and 5 1/2" tall. How can you explain it? Some crazy concept. Also does anyone know how to date made in Japan by red or black ink?
This piece is old. It has crazing.

This hideous piece is like a very strange attempt of a Japanese majolica. I still cant put this think in words. The best word I have for it so far is 'UGLy" lol.

No no, no! It is oxgly! ;-D
And he seems objectively willing to be loved! So... I love him!

I picked it up at Goodwill because it was so ugly that I thought it could be something different. Just curious if someone might know what in the world it is. I'll have some fun with it and then get rid of it, unless it is special in some way. Ugly things tend to be loved more if they are valuable, like the Mona Lisa.

Keep it as a birthday present for an April born...

I don't know how old. It has full crazing. Can the ink color of Made In Japan mark be dated? Just the whole piece is somehow strange.

I cannot remember for sure, I would think if "real old" it would say nippon...I know there was the era of the paper sticker...not sure of years. Adding "made in" was required at some point. I will try to look into it. I have so much old made in Japan stuff at some point I stopped looking it up. Does the crazing almost seem on purpose? Planters seemed to be so popular in the fifties.

It looks like the black stamped made in Japan was used immediately after ww2, 1940's through 1950's, so planter could be 40's as well :)

I think his crazing is not from age, but part of the technique. We call this "craquelé".

That's exactly what I was thinking kyra, great minds...:) like some kind of purposeful crazing for the art of it

It's still ugly. I can't find any like it. Maybe I have the only one in existence. Maybe owned by a person with rose colored glasses.

Most got rid of it and threw it away or better yet, didn't buy it.

Wouldn't he make a great pencil holder on your desk or serve "twizzlers" at your next party in him? Think about it! He's cool!

For the TV remote! Will never anymore seek everywhere...
    17. Jewels Jewels, 10 years ago
Oh yes! Then he can go to get the remote and say, "Who forgot to put the remote back in the oxen!?" :D
