This is really an awesome piece! Can you give me more details...how wide is it and how long is it?
I believe it's Navajo and looks like it was a belt at one time. Possibly a headband. It's 3 Christian crosses and 2 Navajo crosses.
They did some amazing bead work, weaving designs too! I've done this bead work before and it's nothing simple!!!
Looking again at it, the holes at the ends were for leather strips that completed the belt. This appears to be pretty old. I love it.
Personally, I'd add a new leather strip to the back and wear it myself, that's for sure!
I'll see if I can find something similar I recently saw, for reference and add the link here for you. Where and how did you come across this?
I would agree with share - Beaded headband, Navajo - possibly one of Dorothy Mannings designs
thank you share, any additional info would be great.
This is a blanket strip. Have to see it closer to tell you if its Lakota or Cheyenne. We used these originally to cover the center seam on a buffalo robe. Buffalo hides had to be cut up the middle in order to tan them for a robe. This beaded type of strip covered that seam, that's why they're called blanket strips. Navajos didn't start doing beadwork until recently and really, mostly peyote stitch for fan handles. A lot of Navajos dance at Powwows, but most of them wear either a pan Indian style of outfit or borrow from a different tribe. I'm not sure why you see so many items listed as Navajo beaded antiques online. They did/do make beautiful woven rugs/blankets though.
Btw, Google beaded blanket strip to see many similar strips.
yes, Plains blanket strip...not made much anymore but I did one for a friend recently
