Bought a dresser to paint off of Craigslist and the guy had this awesome chest sitting there.. he bought the house and was practically giving away the contents of it. I paid 20$ for this trunk. Its roughly 19 deep 32 long and 22 high. It has canvas lined trays and was obviously taken apart for restoration purposes. I'm just curious about its history. I wanted to do it justice when I try to piece it back together and its going to be a delicate process because parts of it are somewhat fragile. Thanks so much for helping me solve the mystery! :)
Very lovely trunk. It is odd for me to see one with all of the original wood slats off. Looks to be around 1880-1890 flat top trunk. It has nice quality latches and lock. The back hinges are also high quality. There would have been steel banding - two rows -running through from top to bottom... you can see where they have been removed. it's a lovely trunk and will look fabulous with the slats back on -- great find!!
Thank you for the welcome CindB! :) I am so glad the slats were in the bottom. I'm sad to see it in this shape and the canvas and a tiny bit of paper is the best hint I have at its original look. It smells atrocious! :) I can't wait to get it back to some semblance of its original look. trunkman Thanks so much for the information..I'd guesstimated 1880s or early 1900s so I truly appreciate having an idea of its age. I get a wonderful sensation just being near something that has a history..the mystery surrounding it really gives me a thrill! I love the trunks on your page! The Louis Vuitton is fabulous.
Thanks tiff... glad you like it -- and I totally concur with the feeling about being around history -- I have history in every room and I often go to my pieces and just place my hands on them... to connect..... your dog seems a little disinterested but I'm sure he'll come around..
I do that kind of thing too! :) I'm glad I'm not the only one. I think she was honed in on the chocolate chip cookie my toddler was eating lol she has eyes only for food.
I can't imagine pulling all of those nails out to take the banding off this trunk.(Which incidently goes on before the slats). The person that did it was a glutton for punishment as it is difficult to do . trying to repair it may be even more of a challenge. I'm sure it will look great when your done good luck and may the force be with you.
I'm just glad the wood itself wasn't damaged. I'll have to post updated pictures when I get her back in shape :D
