Found this at a Flea market last week and brought it home.
There are no markings on it, the Lock mech. is missing. It is 54 " wide by 34" in height. It has a dome top and crude wrought iron staves. Would like to know how old approx it is and why it is so big. The seller told me it had been in his Grandfathers Barn for over 100 years so.
Thanks for looking.

This is an exquisite chest. A close up clear picture of the dovetail joints will help us date it. It has to be as old as 1850 if not older -- on first glance. Thanks for the post and welcome to Collector's Weekly!
Thanks for the welcome! Much appreciated! Added some close ups of the dovetails and wood pegs.
Well I am a novice at these things so I hope others more in "the know" will verify -- looks like hand made dovetails, old style of pegging, hand made wrought iron, style of piece --to me all adds up to late 1700's early 1800's. Its a great piece!
Excellent find. Based on the photo's I would say this piece is probably right around 1780.

Here is a trunk with possible similar attributes(Although a bit more ornate) . with a date in the late 1830's.
I always believe in finding comparable items. hope this helps.
Another trunk picture found in the Norwegian country side.http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-r2U6H3-HQyg/UPgXlo-giVI/AAAAAAAAA3I/-_26OwoTToc/s1600/Pink+Camera+%2526+Oslo+247.JPG
