I found this huge piece of glass today at Goodwill. i think Vetraio taught me that this kind of glass - w/ the bubbles - is called 'seguso' or something like that. i can't find a signature and i don't know much about it. it stands 12 inches tall and 7.5 inches wide. i assume it's Italian. i have no idea when it was made. any info appreciated!!

Lovely Vase! A Rainbow of Colors, that is for Sure!

Is the base polished enough for Murano Glass? Base Looks a bit duller than I would expect for Murano.....? I await other opinions

      Wow...lovely glass.

Is the base matte as it looks in the photo H02?
If so, and with those particular colours, it might be an excellent piece of Chinese glass. They have the skills!

The bubbles in deliberate order like this is bullicante.
So this vase would be described something like:
A large tapered vase with blue, yellow and red in clear glass, fully cased in clear glass with a bullicante finish. The base is matte ground and the rim is fire polished.
Something like that! Others can have their own go!!

      I'm with Karen.
    8. antiquerose antiquerose, 10 years ago
As I stated above - and as Karen also said. The base IMHO, does not look right for Murano Glass
    9. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 10 years ago
i took the photo of the base in order to best show the scratches - which i think indicate a fair amount of age in the piece. it is definitely matte though - unlike pieces of Murano i've seen. i'm not sure how long the chinese have been doing this, but i think that the piece is at least 30-40 yrs old. also, i couldn't find Chinese bullicante w/ such regulated bubbles. perhaps it is from somewhere else in Italy or even another country?
    10. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 10 years ago
someone suggested to me that it may be an important piece by a Finnish glass worker named Gunnel Nyman. ??
    11. antiquerose antiquerose, 10 years ago
I note the bubbles go from round shape -- to almost a seed-like shape further down the vase.

I had a Blenko Vase with bubbles like that, but the base was not matte on it.

    12. vetraio50 vetraio50, 10 years ago
Nothing to do with Gunnel Nyman, imo. I think it is Chinese.
    13. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 10 years ago
i didn't think it looked like Gunnel Nyman's work either, but it was a supposed 'expert' who made the suggestion. i think it looks both in shape, color and size like some Fratelli Toso pieces i saw. i also saw some Murano pieces w/ matte bottoms just like this one too. so i'm not so sure...

@ho2cultcha -- Yes it can be confusing. There are so many sites where many (and any type) of Glass is called Murano and they have matte bases. Some sellers just flip the name Murano around on anything -- hoping to increase the $$ for their pocket. Also - It is noted -- that sometimes words will be played with. Where the person might say "Made in the STYLE of Murano" (even though it is not Murano but they throw in the word "in the style" as that is suppose to set off that they really do not know. I do not think I have ever seen a *True Murano Piece with a Matte bottom yet. Always polished bases.

So yeah, I know how you feel......

    15. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 10 years ago
thank you antiquerose and vetraio50 too! i really don't mind wherever it was made, but i do think it has some age to it. you can't tell by the photo of the bottom, but it does have quite a bit o wear scratches down there. i'd just like to be sure.
    16. antiquerose antiquerose, 10 years ago
Hugs, your Welcome -- I agree with you. I do think it has some age. I am guessing maybe from the 1970's era and it may be older Chinese art glass.

Yes, base does show good wear in my opinion
    17. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 10 years ago
thank you antiquerose. has anyone seen really good Czech bullicante?
    18. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 10 years ago
it's definitely not a czech piece. i would subscribe to the chinese glass theory if i could see one which is similar or at least a good bullicante piece w/ very regulated bubbles like this one. so far, i've only seen similar ones which are Murano.

      Hunting here for ya.....

I did find a Rainbow Vase with Bubbles at the link below -- but there is NO base pic to see what the base was like (Polished or Matt). So I do not know???

So this might be of some interest:

That IS IT antiquerose! well, a smaller version, but definitely by the same hand! thank you so much! yay!! i am sure that it is Murano now - by AVEM and from the 1960s. thank you again antiquerose!

      Lovely!....:-)
    22. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 10 years ago
NOT Murano, as Vetraio50 pointed out... if you look hard enough, you can find anything you want online, but it doesn't mean it's true!
    23. antiquerose antiquerose, 10 years ago
I did not say it was Murano, I said the base was not right in pt #4 and #8 for Murano -- and then I just said in pt 19 that pic may interest you -- but that there was NO base pic there. I never said it was Murano...

    24. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 10 years ago
yes, you're right. i was pointing out my own rush to the more positive answer to the question!
    25. antiquerose antiquerose, 10 years ago
lol.....Yes I just thought it would be of interest. After all, even that one does not have a label for their own attribution either. So who knows for even them.

I will try to post some paperweights that I have here with the *matte base*. They are Chinese, but I still love them and they have a place in my home.

Lately been coming across glass that I would have sworn was Murano or another glass maker of quality wares, and then I turn the piece over and I see the matte base -- sad trombone. Some still have the Made in China sticker on them. This is not to say the work is not worthy of admiration. This vase, for example. Who knew the Chinese were making bullicante glass? I'd never seen it before.
