Heirloom item here:
Antique Victorian paper mache jewelry. The box is made from highly lacquered black papier mache (aka PAPER Mache). The top of it (of course) is heavily lacquer with painted flower. There is also inlaid pieces of Abalone. The hinges are both there. Lock appears to be made of brass. There are some keys inside, but I have NOT check to see if any of those keys work to this lock . I did take this to a Mini Antique Type of Roadshow here and had them look at it. I do have a written opinion from an Antique Appraiser/collector about it.
Pretty neat I think. Again, passed down through the family.
Thanks for looking
Antiquerose, do you mean that the decorations are papier-mache? The box looks like wood, and decorated with paint! Beautiful work!
Beautifully done , lovely box ;-)
Looks similar to a painted base that i listed a little while back...
