This type of badge was used by the CPD until 1955, when they changed the style of the badge to a five point star. This type of badge was know as a "pie plate" because it was so large. This particular badge was worn by a Chicago policeman until 1955. He retired at the rank of Sergeant during the 1980's. The copper numbers are individually applied. This is how the term "copper", later cop,was coined.

I'm a former Chicago Police Officer, 1967-1971 and I have a pie plate badge. It was given to me as a gift in early 1970s. I am likewise interested in Mr. Markey's question as to its value.
      Thank you.

Depending on the condition, as well as the style and age, these badges sell in the range of $300-$400.

My father was a Chicago Police Officer in the late 20's and 30's he was killed in WWII when I was 6. I have a pic of him in uniform which shows a large star . I am looking for the correct type badge or replica to frame beside his picture. Any help will be appreciated.

I noticed on one of the Pawn Stars they had a badge from the Chicago Police Department. I think it was from the 20's. Might be worth watching. I think it was on in May of this year.

Pie plate badges used during the Capone Era, in Chicago, would be more valuable in my opinion. Age for one thing and the fact that it would be directly tied to gangster history. This is just an opinion of course. :)

Thanks guys both of you are spot on. the "Chicago " badge had a armour logo in the center, Any ideas on finding a good pie plate one? I may have to settle for a replica unless I can find an original for a fair price. Will appreciate any input.
      Thanks

Hey guys need some input on this ole' pie plate, it has summit police in a banner on the top, picture of an eagle holding a badge from it's claws and the # 83 in copper on the bottom.(The start it's self looks like silver or could be nickel, haven't had it tested yet. By ch_hanson co chicago on the back. Any idea of what it is worth and some history behind it? Thanks.. I love a good story

Susan, without seeing it, it sounds like you could have a Summit Illinois police badge. Summit is 12 miles south of Chicago, and was an industrial town. The area was settled in the 1830's and it was incorporated in 1890. CH Hanson was one of the companies that made badges for various police departments. The Illinois state seal has an eagle clutching a badge that has stars on the top portion of the shield, and the bottom portion has vertical stripes. The number 83 would denote an earlier badge. I hope this helps, for there are probably hundreds of Summits all over the country.

I just came across ths site and like Chuck Miller I am looking for a 1930's Chicago Police badge. My great uncle was with CPD from July 1929- April 1955. His name is John D. Lancaster Badge #5874. I have a photo of him in uniform, his Colt Police Specail 38 Cal. revolver and a Post 207 badge with his badge number on it. Looking to get either an origional or replica to add to my display. I am also a retired Deputy Sheriff's Captain from Maricopa County AZ. Thanks for any suggestions.

I just watched Pawn Stars about this pie plate, and the focus is on the center. The one they had said "Armor", which meant the pie plate belonged to a security guard at the Armor plant. Not all of these were from Policemen, but also security guards in Chicago. The center of your badges tell the story.
