I found this little steamer trunk at a local flea market a couple of years ago. It looked pretty bad when I found it (as you can see in the last picture) and I was very reluctant about buying it. But, it was a pretty solid trunk, regardless of it's appearance. For $10, I became it's newest owner. I'm thinking this could have been an old military trunk at one time or another. But, with the fancy lock and the lithograph inside the lid, I'm not too sure about that.

I stripped it down and replaced the rotted canvas covering and all of the severely rusted metal binding with leather binding. Cleaned and repainted the hardware (very heavy cast iron corners), replaced the handles and the rusted tin on the bottom of the trunk. I thought the lock was very interesting looking. It's the first lock of this type I'd ever seen.

I stripped out the interior and relined it, using what was remaining of the original lithograph that I was able to salvage. I did not build a replacement tray for this one. I would not call this a restoration, but a repurposed trunk.
Anyway, I didn't think it turned too terribly bad. My son keeps his Xbox games in it. It works great for that.

    Thanks for looking!!
    Scott

Can hardly tell one from the other you did such a superb job! What a wonderful lock this one has, totally worth the effort on that front alone. I can't fathom going to such lengths - but the results are fabulous!!

Thanks Drill!! I do appreciate the kind comment very much. The lock is one of my favorite things about this trunk. I've yet to see another like this lock. I've always wondered if it's a European trunk?

I don't think that the european manufacturers were using taylor bolt #1 for the latches. The lift hardware is american and quite common as well, from what I can tell. I have seen that lock a few times before only on larger trunks ,it sure is a nice one though.
