This is a beautiful Art Deco, thermometer/humidity guide. This desktop bakelite item was manufactured in the 1930's by the Taylor Instrument Company in Rochester NY. The fins on the base give it a streamlined appearance. The contrasting caramel and cherry bakelite color combination is a rare combo for this item. I've seen it more often with a black face. Many of these streamlined, desktop instruments were designed by H. Brainard Brown for the Taylor Instrument Company, but I could not find this exact case in a patent search. It appears to still work pretty well after all of these years. On the bottom of the base, someone has penciled $3.50, which might be the original price for this item. That would have been a fairly expensive price during the Great Depression era.

Very Nice! Taylor has been around for along time, and I never pass one up, if the price is right.

Nice Sean...does yours have a patent number on it somewhere? I've discovered that a lot of deco items get mistakenly attributed to the wrong designers, especially the more famous ones such as Teague. A patent search can often confirm it, but it helps to have a patent number.

yes there is pat number 1612344 and thankyou Arisellon!!
    6. Arisellon Arisellon, 10 years ago
Sean...interesting. Are you sure that's the right number? That patent number does show this 1926 barometer which is not designed by Teague (click on images on the site): http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=1612344.PN.&OS=PN/1612344&RS=PN/1612344

However, the patent might be just for the mechanical parts of the barometer and not the design of the case.

your right it is just for the mechanical part sorry wrong link .

      do love your barometer!!!

Sean...it's possible he designed yours for Taylor, since he designed this similar one for Taylor:

      https://www.google.com/patents/USD89620?dq=%22walter+dorwin+teague%22&hl=en&sa=X&ei=boDCVMbrOomeNt-EgNgD&ved=0CDgQ6AEwBDgU

With Google patent search, you search by designer, which I did for Teague. However, I did not see yours specifically. It's not an exact science for sure and not everything was patented.
