This is a portrait of Cornelia "Nell" Flint Cousins Egan who was the second wife of a famous war correspondent. This was painted in 1971 by John Northcross who was an advertising artist. After I purchased this, I discovered that it once belonged to an actor who played a doctor in the original Dark Shadows television series. He was the doctor who was murdered by Barnabas Collins, the vampire in one of the episodes. I love this painting. I contacted the actor's daughter who sent me the actual photo of Mrs. Egan who lived in the Hamptons in New York.

    Original sale:

Painted by John Northcross in 1971. Owned by Dr. George Van Derveer Gallenkamp. From the estate of Peter Turgeon, artist and actor. Peter played Dr. Dave Woodard on the original Dark Shadows television series
JOHN NORTHCROSS (American, 20th Century), Portrait Mrs. Martin Egan. Oil on linen. Signed lower left John Northcross. Has a tag affixed to the frame, portrait of Mrs. Martin Egan, "T.C." property of George B. Gallenkamp painted by John Northcross 1971. There is a typed label on back stretcher, Property of Dr. George Gallenkamp Orwell, Vt. Good condition. Painting measures 50" x 30 ¼". Period frame measures 58 ¾" x 39". House of Heydenryk custom frame. Painting is from the Amagansett, Long Island estate of artist/actor Peter Turgeon (1919-1999).

    MRS. MARTIN EGAN ASSISTED CHARITIES

Mrs. Martin Egan, who was active in charitable causes, died Thursday at her home after a long illness. She was 83 years old and lived at 1 East End Avenue. Mrs. Egan, who was born in Brooklyn, was the widow of Martin Egan, a war correspondent and a member of JP Morgan & Co.
She graduated from Adelphi Academy and served in France in the Women's Auxiliary of the American Expeditionary Force during World War I.
Mrs. Egan was especially interested in the Animal Medical Center of New York, the New York Association for the Blind, the Salvation Army, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the New York Hospital for Rehabilitation.
She was a member of the Junior League of Brooklyn, and belonged to yacht clubs in East Hampton, LI and Nassau, the Bahamas, where she maintained homes.

On Thursday, February 10, wife of the late Martin Egan; cousin of Thomas Flint Cousins and Mrs. Randolph Dickins. Reposing at Frank E. Campbell, Madison Avenue at 81st Street Sunday 3-5 PM. Service Monday 2:30 PM. Internment Green-Wood Cemetery.

Thank you to "JustBrowsing" for the newspaper article with the portrait and Dr. Gallenkamp.

She's glorious! I noticed the wonderful jade necklace, butterfly brooch and earrings, assorted to the asian theme of wearing a kimono shaped dress!

That is the same thing that happened to me! Something drew me to this portrait that is unexplainable. I just had to have it. It had made its way from the Hamptons NY to St. Petersburg, FL. The shop owner had the whole history as well as the subject wrong. When I discovered the "Dark Shadows" connection, it became even more special. It looked like something that could have been hanging on the walls of the Collins mansion. The artist who painted it is known as one of the "Mad Men." The doctor that had it painted is very mysterious and lived in a wonderful mansion that was featured in a magazine spread. Everything about it drips with mystery, style, class. I find it very spiritual . You made me realize again how much I love my "Green Lady."

Where was it posted? Where at? tell me more?
    28. kyratango kyratango, 10 years ago
As mystery posts, with descriptions for the accessories or furniture in background, like old nordic teak dresser or a victorian gynecological instrument.
Each comment on it put it in front of what happening now! They were two, bullied antiquerose and sean, saying they were hackers who will break down their pc and the site if some sue was made upon them.

Hi vintagelamp. This is a belated response, coming six years later, but I see you’ve kept your green lady as your icon, so here goes: I knew the doctor who owned this painting to start with, George Gallenkamp. He and his partner were friends with my family, and George tutored me in French when I was in 9th grade. I’d go over to their mansion for lessons, and maybe it was on one of those visits he showed me this painting. It made quite an impression on me at 14! And George was a very sweet man. Have more to share if you are interested, but am not sure if you’ll see this, as this posting is so old. I’m not normally on this site but will hop back on if I receive notification you’ve responded.

So great to hear from you! I have been looking for more information on George Gallenkamp for some time. I found a photo of his headstone but nothing else. I would love to know more about him and anything he may have told you regarding the painting or the painting's subject.
I am currently in the process of moving, so it may be several days before I can respond, but I would love to hear more! Thank you so much!!!

Thanks for the comment and the attachment. I have to watch the Johnny Depp version. I really love the original 1960s version!

Hello, I’m curious if you have any information about the artist. I had a dear friend by the name of John Northcross when 25 years ago. I was in my early 20’s and he was in his late 70’s but it didn’t keep us from meeting each day for coffee. We did this for about 5 years! He was my artistic mentor. My John was also an advertising artist that did portrait work. I’m curious if there is a way to know if this could be one of my dear friends painting?! Either way it is beautiful; it even looks like his work!
      Warm regards,
      W
