Hard to find small trunk, I purchased it on an online auction site. I just had to have it, loved the size and the fact it had the original interior tray, as you know those are usually missing. It is 18 inches wide and 17 inches tall, it has a slight domed lid. I'm currently using it as bed side storage and night stand. I removed the old covering (first picture shows some removed and a lot more to go) refinished the wood, replaced the leather handles and added fabric to the inside tray. Still have to refinish the inside of the lid and replace the worn out original picture, waiting for the warm weather to return so I can get out in my workshop. You can't own to many trunks, to me these are beautiful pieces of history, I would love to know where they have travelled. March 2015 Update - completed the interior and a few touch ups on exterior this one is done, on to the next one.
Kathy, this is such a beautiful and perfect size trunk. I love this size, as they are not only easier to work with, but easier to place around your house. I have quite a few of the smaller trunks, mostly hat trunks.
Nice job!! Thanks for sharing and keeping our history alive!!!
Excellent as you have said due to the small size. Plus it has the insert.
That's a sweet trunk KathyKay -- the big brass lock-plate is fabulous. Love these smaller trunks... and the bonus insert...
Very cool little trunk. I especially like the way the metal looks on this with that aged look. What all did you do to the metal to get that look?
Hi FatBoy64 - the metal was in nice condition very little rust, it had a lot of the original paint/finish intact. I used steel wool to clean up the rust spots. I coated the metal with the same finish I used on the wood, a semi gloss polyurethane.
