I was really quite shocked when this vase arrived the other day - the box it came in was huge, and heavy! When I bought this vase, it was almost by accident - I put in a very small bid, and didn't expect to be the high bidder - so I really hadn't taken much note of its size. This vase stands 14" tall, and has a lot of presence in a room! I believe the bird is a type of small parrot, and it has classic Harrach foliage, flowers, and a butterfly surrounding it. There is some wear to the surface of the enameling, but the glass is as glossy as ever, and it is still a lovely vase. Even with a flashlight shining inside, it was very hard to see any color other than deep black. I believe this vase dates to about the 1880's.
Beautiful vase!...it's great having surprises like that!..isn't it!..:-)))
Lovely, and such delicate enamelling!
Thanks so much inky & sklo42! :)
The real test for thick black glass is to hold it toward the sun and look through it. You should be able to see the Amethyst tint through the bottom. Of course it could be "Black Glass" but most of the Harrach pieces I found, have the Amethyst tint. Nice enamelling work! RER
Thanks, Bob! I'll have to check it out in full sun - using a light on it didn't show any color, but a bright sunny day might make a difference! :)
