This is one of my very favorite trunks! But it's so hard to pick a favorite when there are so many beautiful and interesting trunks. I bought it about 3 years ago from an old retired lady up near the Michigan border and she said the story from her family was that it was custom made for someone in her family. It's very possible that it was made by Martin Maier in Detroit, MI because they had specialized in this alternating wood style trunk. But I know it could have been custom made by another trunk maker. Anyway, it's very large and strong, almost 42" long, 27" tall, and 22 1/2" wide. The heavy leather handles are even original. I cleaned the wood good and cleaned a little rust off the metal and repainted that. The wood is beautiful with lots of interesting grain. I researched the wood and believe it is made from golden elm and black elm from Michigan. Many trunk makers of the late 1800's to mid 1900s used elm from Michigan for their trunk slats. Most people think the slats are oak, but the fact is that elm was used most of the time, and then ash, and a little bit of oak. But the golden elm looks a lot like oak and so it's easily confused. Elm has a really beautiful and swirly grain in some boards, which you can see on the slats on this trunk. This trunk is not stained and the colors are natural with some clear tung oil varnish applied. The hardware, lock, hasp, rollers, etc. are all original. There is a nice tray with the trunk too, which is great in such a large trunk. Check out the bottom of the trunk which is just as beautiful as the top! I enjoy using this trunk as my computer table right now. Thanks for looking. Marvin
