This is a super cool Airplane Ashtray Floor Canadian Model that I found in a local shop. It looks great with my art deco bell, Ronson cigarette holder/lighter, Lindbergh ashtry and Jean Harlow-like image on tobacco tin. I just love it!

Special thanks to Phil D. Morris for the wonderful information/knowledge that he has shared with me regarding this post.

That old pack of Bangle cigarettes would look cool on there too!

And those recently posted ivory cigarette holders :) - What a perfect display for smoking items.
    3. vintagelamp vintagelamp, 10 years ago
Yes, but no room left. The cigarette holders are in a glass display table and the Bangle Cigs are in a butler figural smoking stand that I will post soon.

PhilDavid, I was not offended at all. I appreciate your comments. I think that you took my response the wrong way. I am sorry. I get a little upset when people use my info also..was just trying to say that I could relate. I enjoy your comments believe me.

I have had many with simple trays on them instead of the hearts, clubs, etc. ones. I have had about 4 or so with the simple tray. Usually they had a chrome set of square box cig container with them. Those appear online time to time. Phil
    23. vintagelamp vintagelamp, 7 years ago
Phil, Thank you! I had always imagined that there should be a cigarette container or something since I considered it a smoking stand.
    24. PhilDMorris PhilDMorris, 7 years ago
The trays are quite heavy when you are talking the rectangular ones. They are probably around 3h 4-5 wide and maybe 3 inches thick, I imagine you could also buy the silver ones when they come up. Nice that yours has the pivot so that you can position the airplane. The pivot is mostly missing. They are usually regarded as a standing ashtray or floor model. This summer I contacted one of the manufacturers sons. He was the youngest prob of them so likely in 40's. he gave me a lot of false info. So much for contacting him. There are so many misconceptions out there. Your example also has one of the nicest poured glass pieces at the base also !~

I learned in about 1984 that the owners let the workers make up one of them for Christmas using any of the parts they were famous for making for their standing ashtrays. That was nice of them. There were basically 2 companies out of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Metalcraft Manufacturing Company Ltd. and also Electrolite. I do believe that Electrolite was a part of Metalcraft, however. Was started by a guy named Harold Shapiro. Both companies said that !!! What is that for odds !

Phil, OMG! Thank you for all of this wonderful information.!!! I have to take better photos, because, looking back, these photos are horrible. The only issue with this is that it contains a blue light to light up the plane and I cannot imagine that was original. I love the idea that the workers could make their own for Christmas. I would have had fun doing that myself! Thank you again, for the great information..I REALLY appreciate it!

Super cool is right. A lot of times you can find the standing lamp to match with beautiful torchiere shade. The acro agate glass base you have is beautiful and they used a nice brown or reddish brown colour that they mixed in with that so each piece is a different pattern. That was one of the only pieces where there was a nice colour Sometimes they also used yellow and green hues in other parts. The heart spade diamond club tray with fitting accoutreents is the most desireable, but I love both as much. My parents had a set from Eatons Canada who first started selling them in 1946. There were so many companies set up in that year right after the war, must have been a record. Some of the best Canadian and U.S. companies were started that year !!

Yeah blue is bad for the airplane. I love using a red bulb best for the airplane. The other parts are the bases being lighted. Usually clear is best and blue is a popular color. Like I mentioned yours has a brown tinted base which is the only of one or 3 parts using brownish tints which are the nicest. That particular base is almost always with a reddish brown hue, so the nicest. Hate pieces with yellow in them and try to trade out on parts with yellow hue. Beautiful Airplane ashtray you have !!~ One year I remember buying 100 4-packs of bulbs for my ashtray collection! They were on sale going out of mainstay use for Christmas that year.

Phil, I am going to replace these photos with better ones soon. I also shined it up so it looks much better now. It would be great to have a lamp. I don't think that I ever saw the lamp. I am glad that you like the base, because judging from your posts, you have great taste. I purchased this in the same place I bought my "Elvis" standing microphone and I love both pieces. I do have to replace the bulbs to get the full effect. Really great information that you have! Thanks for sharing the knowledge! Bob

Glad to help, I helped some people near where I live but now that I moved they might have some trouble replacing bulbs in the very complicated lamps I rebuilt for them back in the day.
    31. vintagelamp vintagelamp, 7 years ago
Phil, Thank you again. I wondered how complicated it would be replacing the plane bulb. I guess that I'm not ready to find out yet :)
    32. vintagelamp vintagelamp, 7 years ago
      Phil, New photos added
    33. PhilDMorris PhilDMorris, 7 years ago
Love the new pictures, Bob. The bulb in airplane would be very easy to replace. Would be easier with 2 people but I have done so many myself. All you have to do is 1. turn the complete stand over 2. at the bottom of fuselage there are 2-3 screws 3. take out those screws and the fuselage is no longer attached to wings. 4. lift off the airplane fuselage and replace bulb.

I cannot see the other sige of airplane - and if there is a switch in one of the airplane windows, then turn it counter clockwise until it screws out. You would have to take the switch out before doing the other steps. Phil

Phil, Thank you! I will let you know when I tackle the light. What kind of light does it take?
    35. PhilDMorris PhilDMorris, 7 years ago
In a lot of these, the piece on the bottom is lit by one bulb which was often done also, you could look at that also when you turn upside down. In all the factory sold ones they used one bulb, depending on the size and shape of piece you can add any number of buls if you wish. Just know how to handle if you are doing the work yourself. Beware if you take it to someone else to fix that they are extremely careful. I have heard of breakage from professional workmen who are not too careful.
    36. vintagelamp vintagelamp, 7 years ago
Phil, Wow! Thanks for telling me about professionals breaking things replacing the bulbs. I will be sure to be extra careful. I am going to look at it better tomorrow to see what I am up against. Sincerely appreciate all of the info that you have provided.
    37. PhilDMorris PhilDMorris, 7 years ago
Just turn it over carefully, over a bed is best, just put an old blanket over good sheets. ! I do that when I unpack anything that might be breakable, always over a bed!

A friend had one of those deco lamps that had a girl holding a globe in her hand. I believe he turned it over on the front desk and the hand snapped off.
    38. vintagelamp vintagelamp, 7 years ago
Phil, Will do. If I would have broken that lamp that your friend broke, I would have to sign myself in to the mental-health ward.
