i thought i had posted this photo a long time ago, but i can't find it in my items. i think that this is a photo which has been enhanced completely w/ pastels. at least that's the process i think was used. i've seen a few of these and really like them, but i've always wondered about the process. this is a really large piece - the photo alone is 20 inches x 16 inches.

when i first got this picture a long time ago, i thought it was kind of creepy too, but over time, i've gotten to be very fond of this very loving couple. he has a lot of kindness in his eyes and she loves him fiercely. i've never become so fond of anyone through a photograph before.
can someone please tell me the process that was used to create these old photo/pastels? i used to see them fairly often, and nobody has been able to tell me how they were made. i'm very curious!
Hi ho2. I think you've got the dates right and I have wondered about this before as well. I think it's charcoal. Hopefully our experts here will let us know so we won't keep guessing! ;) I like mine that are like this too.
These are actually enlarged photographs. As part of the enlargement process many of the details were lost and they were "painted" or drawn onto the photograph.
Typically this type is called a charcoal. Color enhanced version are called pastels. 16 X 20 is the most common size.
Most date from the 1880s- 90s. However the photograph that was enlarged can date from an earlier time period. I often deal with enlargements of Civil War photographs.

I always thought people looked so miserable is pictures back in those days. Then I looked it up, they had to sit like what 39 mins or longer just to one picture taken. I'd look miserable too. I really like it. It would go in a frame on my wall.
