Every year in Indiana there are several festivals throughout the state in the fall. One of the festivals is called The Covered Bridge Festival. One particular bridge festival is in Bridgeton, Indiana. There was once a beautiful covered bridge there, but one night an arson burned it down. After donations and other means of funding the bridge was rebuilt back to it's glory. I went out there several times and enjoyed watching them built the bridge back. Just thought I would share with the viewers that have never seen a covered bridge. I will post some finish photos in the future.

There are several covered bridges in my area that have been restored. The skills and craftmanship of the construction crew is pretty amazing. I am fascinated with timber framing, it is a very strong technique, thanks for posting.

    8. kerry10456 kerry10456, 14 years ago
Some wood floor still but mainly steel and concrete. Just finished up on 105' singe span and a gravel road in the middle of nowhere
    9. StihlCollector StihlCollector, 14 years ago
Kerry, I admire you to be able to walk those spans during construction, better you than me. lol

Thats really lovely, i live in a tiny village with a river running through it, it has a very ancient stone built bridge over it next to an old gate house on the road to the castle, great salmon fishing too!

I just noticed these photographs. My folks used to travel to the Covered Bridge Festival and my mother would take pictures of the covered bridges, then paint them. I have several of her covered bridge oil paintings. I'm looking forward to a photo of the finished bridge! Thanks for posting.

i think this would be called an 'uncovered bridge', no?

      haha

i grew up down the road from the longest covered bridge in the world in cornish, nh. one year, when the ice broke, enormous chunks of ice - bigger than houses - were pushed down the river and they piled up against the bridge and destroyed a lot of it. thankfully, it was rebuilt in a short time.

Ramblings of an old man with knowledge. Most people think covered bridges were made so people in buggies could get out of the rain or to protect the wood from weather. Real reason: They were orig. put together with wood pegs. If you are bored enough to be reading this, then you should be able figure out why they didn't want the pegs to get wet!

      Well BB
They didn't want the pegs to get wet and swell ..if they did the bridge would have no give and no movement and would breakkkkkkkkkkkkkk apart ...and fall into the river... when driven on or wait of snow,or heavy winds ...thus it is a matter of live wait or dead wait ...
    48. officialfuel officialfuel, 10 years ago
Roycroftbooksfromme1, I do have some new photos of the new bridge that is completed. I just need to find them and get them on here and show you all it's very beautiful just like it was back in the day it was built.
