While back in the UK at Christmas I bought this brooch. It is 15ct gold not marked, the setting is silver there are Ceylon sapphires, rubies, diamonds pearls and if you look closely at the eyes I think one of the stones is a emerald and the other a demantoid garnet. If you look at the legs there is a lot of detailed engraving. You can wear it either has a brooch or pendant. Made around 1890.
I have put him with his big brother, he was on one of my earlier postings. This one is flatter than his big brother, his brother has his wings up as if he's ready to take off.
I bought this one first, I saw the bigger one on eBay a few days after, it was a good price, so the smaller one got a friend.

WHAT? I now have one more serious challenger for Bug/Insect brooches, aarhg ;-)
Of course, I do love them! You did well, they are becoming more and more pricy, so when one is at a correct price... Catch it in your net :-D

Why there is no "I hate the poster" button, lol!

I asked the jewellery in his opinion what would be a good thing to collect, yes he said bugs. He said they are becoming scare because people are buying and keeping hold of them.

Kyra, can you see the different eye colour. I asked him what stone they were, at first he said Demantoid Garnet then Emerald, it looks has if I got one of both. Lol. I only realised when I was looking closely with the loupe, it shows up more on this photo.

You are right! Often the two stones are misdescribed.
More often demantoids are confused with peridots, but even tiny stones have a distinctive green color!

What a beautiful butterfly, Peasejean!!! I love that it has different color eyeballs!!
    16. Peasejean55 Peasejean55, 10 years ago
Yes I know, lol. The jeweller who I bought it from couldn't decide if the eyes were Emerald or Demantoid Garnet. After looking though the loupe, I now know I have one Emerald eye and the other is Demantiod Garnet. It looks very clear on this photo, but if you just looked at the eyes you wouldn't know any different.

Stunning butterfly !! I see the different green eyes which is the garnet , ill guess the one on the left ??
    21. Peasejean55 Peasejean55, 10 years ago
Hi surfdub, the jeweller who I bought this Butterfly from said the eyes were Emerald then changed his mind to Dermatoid Garnet, it was only when I saw these photos, I realised they were both different colours, I think the one on the right is the Garnet, but I'm not a hundred percent. Many thanks for the love :-)
