Update on a trunk I posted about 6 months ago. Almost done refinishing it, polished the brass and lock plate, sanded the slats and used tung oil to finish them. I replaced the worn out handles and repaired the inside compartment in the lid, some of the pieces were missing. The last thing to get done is a tray, I need to make one to replace the original which was missing. Thanks to TrunkerMarvin I have pictures of what the original would have looked like, he has motivated me to get this adorable trunk completed. I will add a picture when I get the tray completed.

Wow!! Very nice. It looks like a miniature Excelsior trunk.

Looking good, KathyKay! Yes, this is a miniature Excelsior Patent 1868 trunk and if you look closely above the lock on the lid you will see where the original leather tag (or lifter) was nailed on each end. These small ones had the leather tag just like many of the large Excelsior trunks had, which had the name and patent date of Jan. 7, 1868 stamped in them. But the leather tag was smaller than the size used on the large trunks.

Here is a neat picture I found of the factory Kathy, might look good inside. The trunk
looks great. Of course Marvin is right , kind of makes you want to make one for it?

Drill, thanks for the picture agree it would look nice in the interior. Plan on working on a tray as soon as the weather improves, no heat in the workshop with temps in the single digits not working out there anytime soon. The picture you provided will be added on the hat box part of the tray or on inside the lid. Working in leather isn't something I've mastered or even dabble in. I've make simple handles and straps from old belts but nothing beyond that.

Maybe Jim or Marvin would know how to go about replicating one,or who could?Just a thought. Guessing this was what the original would look like in 1868 on the larger one. Uniquely shaped to say the least. I to am no expert in leather either. But it may be as simple as punching some letters in a small piece, not sure.

Thanks Drill, for the full size one Marvin had recommended reaching out to Jim. I have a full size Excelsior that I plan on refinishing this summer so need to hunt down one for the full size and my doll size trunk so they will look complete.

Thanks to Jim at hmsantiquetrunks.com I have a reproduction leather piece for over the lock with Excelsior and the patent date, looks just like the original would have.
