Big enamel damage on this extraordinary enamel!
Charles F. VARLEY was a famous enamelist who's works were integrated to Archibald KNOX boxes and jewellery for Liberty and Co.

Though unsigned and unmarked, it is undoubtful his work :-)
    1.5/8" diameter.

Big part of my repair was to shape the white Fimo polymer clay to fill the lacking part in slight rounded shape...
Water color pencils rubbed on wet make-up thin brush, applied before heating in the oven at 110 celsius for 20 minutes.
Then protected with a thin layer of top coat nail polish.

Repair is still obvious, but result is over my expects !

    Thanks for looking :-)

Nice work. I saw this but thought it was beyond repair.

I didn't find out until many years after I started collecting Arts & Crafts that Charles Fleetwood Varley was actually my great great great uncle. I actually have Varley as one of my middle names, as do all of my close relatives (who have had for generations).

I have one piece, an amazing brooch. I found out that after the work he did for Liberty and the Guild Of Handicrafts, he worked for some Hatton Road jewellers including Thomas L Mott.

He was also a watercolorist which is how I made the connection. My grandmother told me that my Varley ancestor's watercolours were in the Victorian National Gallery. When I went to see them, I realised it was Charles Fleetwood Varley.

If only we had a few enamels in the family!

Hi kyra, I've seen this, I couldn't believe how much their asking for it.
    40. Jewels1900 Jewels1900, 8 years ago
Yeeees, very expensive as a general rule. That's why I only own one!

There was a broken one that sold recently, thought you might have been onto it Kyra. A single tree, I thought likely Varley but not 100% sure.
    41. kyratango kyratango, 8 years ago
Yep Jean! All his stuff is overpriced :-D
    42. kyratango kyratango, 8 years ago
      Jewels1900, I haven't seen the broken one...
Did it went for a lot? I'd love to see it if you have a link :-)

Nice use of gold good, trees & mountain good. Not sure the definition, particularly around the trunk & branches are as good as yours.
    45. Peasejean55 Peasejean55, 8 years ago
Yep I saw this but wasn't sure if it was Charles Varley.
    46. kyratango kyratango, 8 years ago
Oh! Thank you Jewels1900 for the link!

I don't know if the pic is out of focus, but the sharp details aren't there, nor the kind of iridescence in the enamel work of Varley!

The crazing is beyond repair, I don't think I'd have bought it ;-)
    47. Jewels1900 Jewels1900, 8 years ago
Have you seen my one Kyra? I'm not 100% sure it's Varley because the colour palate is unusual for him. But it is superb and it's huge. If it is him, and I think it is, its probably by the GoH. It's a highlight of my collection. You should check it out.
    48. kyratango kyratango, 8 years ago
No... I explored your pinterest boards (so much treasures!!!), but couldn't find it
    49. Jewels1900 Jewels1900, 8 years ago
Hi Kyra, its on the bottom of my collection page. Large round brooch. Big river in foreground, trees in background. Leafwork & beading around edge. Green & violet colour way.
