This exquisite vase from Japan has been cut by hand and is certified Edo Kiriko.

    So what is Edo Kiriko?
In 1824 in Edo (present day Tokyo) Kyubei Kagaya started experimenting with cutting patterns in glass, and developed a style and technique that was then fostered as a craft specific to Edo. In the mid to later 1800s the Japanese started using cutting equipment and methods adopted from Europe, but retained manual methods of cutting and traditional designs.

"In 1985 Edo Kiriko was designated a Traditional Craft Industry by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. To qualify as a Traditional Craft Industry, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government stipulates that the main process of manufacture must require the expert manual skills, the history of the techniques used must date back at least a century, and the craft must use traditional materials. "

This vase then was cut by hand using traditional methods.
    It is exquisite I think!
Generally Edo Kiriko is very expensive (as you can imagine). I was lucky with this one.
    Height 19cm

Note: The Japanese LOVE cut glass and are big buyers of Bohemian and French glass. They also now have a large market player in hand cut glass from China, which is sneakily called Edo Chiriko.

Very beautiful! It is so different from cutting glass I've known.I think the simplier the most expressive it is.

Beautiful :).....Don't know why but my first impression was an Iris flower.

Exquisite indeed.....just magical the way the design 'sits' on the form. It looks to be a hexagon top and bottom....but not a simple hexagon. Almost as confusing as an Escher drawing.....fascinating!

Thanks Ivonne. Japanese cut glass certainly has it's own beautiful style

Well you do know the Japanese psyche well Mike ....in fact many traditional designs are based on flowers.

Thanks Peggy......it is Escherish! It constantly pulls me in.

The thing I love about it is you can see it was hand made, because it's perfection is not perfect!

Overwhelmed with the love guys! That is a GOOD thing.
Generally I don't think any cut glass is valued enough these days.

It is looking beautiful at the moment refracting light from my window.
Nuts....I'm struggling for space! Lots of boxes.........
