The character that looks like a rectangle bisected by a line down the middle (‘zhong’) means ‘middle’ or ‘centre’. For example, if the English signage named ‘XXX Middle Road’ or ‘YYY Shopping Centre’, count on that character appearing in the Chinese signage.
Two characters together reading ‘Zhongguo’ - ‘Middle Kingdom’ or ‘Central State’ - means China. The character for ‘kingdom’ is the character for ‘king’ (‘wang’) with a tiny stroke denoting a jade seal and the whole surrounded by a box - pictorially the king within the borders of his kingdom.
(Sorry, being pedantic.)
Sorry, keramikos, I do okay with a few languages, but they are all ones which use alphabets. In Beijing, say, I enjoy including beginner one-on-one classes taught by a local resident, but that mostly helps with travel.
I collect Far East ceramic pieces, and this here seems like a double identification. The red script is Japanese representing the characters often used THE GREAT JAPAN.
The box with a line through it is used by both countries with one difference, the Japanese use a horizontal line to divide it, the Chinese use a vertical line to divide it. Mid to lat
My best guess is this was a Japanese ceramice vase blank, and it was finished with the geisha and flowers, fruit motifs in China. Mid to late 20th century.
