Here is a mystery for the French speakers to solve. This is a fascinating 385 year old document on vellum, written in faded French and the only words I can make out are Croix Saint and Claude.
I have a tendency to jump to conclusions when researching an item, and every collector/dealer knows the feeling of holding history in your hand and wondering if their find will turn out to be a real historical treasure. Anyway, when I google - Saint Croix, Claude and the year 1630 - I get information on the first permanent settlement in the United States by Claude de Saint-Etienne de la Tour in Acadia on the island of St. Croix off the coast of Maine. In 1628 Claude was captured by the British, and when he returned to Acadia in 1630, with an English wife, he had switched sides and fought his son, Charles for control of Acadia. He lost.
This document could have absolutely nothing to do with the above history, but it did fascinate my brain for a small amount of time. If anyone could give a brief interpretation of its contents it would be most appreciated.

I have listed the next owner of Acadia"Nicolas Denis"1654, mind was printed on woodcut, interested piece you got there, but i tell you right now, this is not an easy one, when you drop a century down on writing documents, it's much difficult :( to read.
I will see what i can do, also others will speaks.

Alan
I mean from the previous you listed from XVIII century, this one from XVII, the writing it's much difficult to read,
Hi Alan - I just looked up your document - very nice! And yes, very difficult to read. I have a 1647 document from Dorsetshire, England, written in English and I had a lot of trouble making out what it said. I did discover it was a marriage contract - written right in the middle of the English Civil War when Charles I was in prison. I'll post a picture of it.
Ho yeap
English older style are even worse
I will do my best...;) when I have little spare time, later today.
At least get it started
Alan
Wish you and your 2017 is fill with, Peace, Love, Prosperity and love.
All the best.
