I love this bowl and 'kåsa' (guksi in English I believe). They are both hand made out of something you call "vril" (burl in English), a kind of lump that sometimes grow in trees. The vril is thought to be caused by a genetical fault that makes the fibers in the tree go in differents directions instead of down. This can be seen in different kinds of treespecies but I think my pieces are both from masurbjörk (betula pendula in latin).
Making bowls and drinkingcontainers like the "kåsa" out of vrils is an old craft. I love the fact that people saw these and realised they could make something out of them. My guess is that the bowl is from the 1940-1950's somewhere and the kåsa is from around 1980´s. The bowl looks great when filled with plums or berries and I use the kåsa to drink and eat out of when I´m out in the wilderness. Come to think of it the bowl has an "art noveau" feel to it.
There is no right category for these on CW.
BEAUTIFUL burl!!! I have some Red Oak trees in my yard. I had a really nice burl growing on the side of one of the trees. Went on vacation and came home to find someone had stolen the burl. I didn't realize they were in such demand until then.
Jscott0363 that's awful! Who does that?! It's amacing what some people can do.
Thanks for loving mine :)
Thanks Katherinescollection, aghcollect, Mikelv85 and Vetraio50!
Thanks PhilipDavidAlexandermorris!
Good burl wood is expensive, it is also the most difficult piece to carve because the grain runs in all different directions. In keeping with that, it also brings a pretty penny when finished. I have a maple burl that I have had for 18 years and the bark hasn't fallen totally off yet. One day I will sell it, trade it or give it away and someone will have a great piece for a bowl.
I appreciate you sharing your pieces, I always enjoy seeing wood, especially anything burl.
stunning!!
Fhrjr2, that's right. It is valuable wood. I just can't understand how you can take it from somebodyelses yard - it's steeling.
Thankyou, I also enjoy wood. Always on the look out for more burl pieces. Will post if I find any.
Thanks Sean :)!
Thanks kyratango!
Thanks Manikin!
Thanks Blunderbuss2!

Surfdub66, thankyou for your nice coment.
Thanks Trey!
Thanks pops52!
Nothing like going back to crafts and nature as we should be doing what beautiful items here, how divine. I often wonder how they wash up....
Thankyou AnneLanders for your nice coment. 'Wash up'? Do you mean how to clean them or how the turn up (like how things wash up from the sea)? I might miss the point here because english is not my language. If you mean how to wash them it's easy. Just use washingup liquid and a dishwashingbrush. Wood is great to use for serving food from and use in the kitchen.
Thankyou AnneLanders and kyratango for loving this post.
Hi! Elisabethan...hope you are well!...:-)
Thanks inky!
Inky, I didn't see your message when I wrote you. I'm alright but have been away from CW for a while as one of my children is ill in hospital. But I try to return because I need to occupy my mind from time to tine and what's better than CW and jewellry (my main field of interest). How are you inky?
I am well thank you!...I too! have been away for a while, busy with building our new home...trying to catch up...not easy...:-/..... I am so!!!! sorry to hear about your 'baby' in hospital, I do hope it is not that! serious!...:-/...
It is but I'm armed with hope, faith and love. Thankyou.
A new house? That's wonderful :). Are you building it yourself?
Um, these are DELICIOUS. I'm brand-new on this site, but I'm already loving the vibe here. I'm real big into wood and these Gnarls are gorgeous!
Thankyou I'm glad you like them :).
Yes!...well at least from the inside frame, the builders did the outside frame, we do everything from the isolation in the walls and ceiling to the tiling and cabinetry in the kitchen and bathrooms...sooo!! when you are doing all that yourself and your husband works full time as well, progress is slow..but! very satisfying when each project is done!..we also have a new acre garden to design...:-)
I am sorry to hear that things aren't good and I so!! wish I could say or do something that would help...but you can't beat faith and love and I am sure you have abundance of both and my thoughts are with you x...:-)
I really understand that it's a lot if you do all that! But also very revarding!
Thankyou and yes you are right. I have plenty of that :). It's also great to have a hobby/interest like I do with jewelry and CW to rest in from time to time. I hope there will be more posts from folks soon. I look forward to your.
