The designer of these there tiles for ARABIA was Hilkka Säynäjärvi aka Hilkka Mekri (1917 - 1988). They are signed on the back within the porcelain "HS ARABIA FINLAND". They are thought to be works from the 1960's.

There is not much on the net about Hilkka Maria Säynäjärvi. I get the impression that she married twice. The first time to Rafael MEKRI (MAKAROV) who died in 1944. After her marriage to Säynäjärvi her signature became HS.

She was a graduate of the Central School of Art and Design and worked in the Arabia Art Department as a designer and also threw small pots from 1945 to 1952. She made tiles and decorated them with romantic scenes and co-designed with Ritva Kaukoranta and Raija Tuumi.

I believe these tiles are from a later period when she worked as a freelance ceramic designer and illustrator.

You usually see these tiles as single pieces. Luckily I was able to buy three one Saturday morning more than twenty years ago. They are made of porcelain and have two holes at each end. This is how I used them.

Personal choice I suppose. The largest at the bottom and then the other two out of order size wise. It looked to right to me twenty years ago. I used some leather thongs to tie them up and hang 'em!

What would you have done with them?

As I say I have seen similar single pieces on the net available but I could never work out how to use one without introducing other items.

I am intrigued by the way you chose to display them. Unpredictable, and they ask for such, or so it seems to me now having seen them displayed like this. You are such a teacher. In the best possible sense of the word. You shine a light on things, I didn't even notice and inspire new ways to view things, I so look forward to reading your posts. Thank you for all you share. Your students were very very lucky as I find I am too, having met you here.
      Sincerely,
      Lisa
