I call this a stagecoach trunk which is possibly a true "gold rush" period trunk because I believe it is a pre-1850 American trunk and an unusual shape I have never seen before. It's not the same as some of the Jenny Lind style trunks. The bottom is a bell shape and the top is perfectly flat. It's not a large trunk, only about 28 inches wide. It was covered with thick leather which had rotted, so it was removed. The iron bands, lock, and brass are original, but the large brass studs are solid cast brass and a different shape than the later style. I believe this trunk was very likely made in the 1840s during the gold rush period. It's been in my collection for several years now. I did replace the leather handles, and I put on a couple of the more typical style brass buttons on them. I also put the copy of an early fashion lithograph in the lid. This was definitely hand made and a unique shape.

Drill, you are absolutely right... when you spot something different like this at a sale or flea market it really gets the heart pumping and you immediately wonder if you are going to be able to buy it. It can ruin your day if you see a SOLD sticker on it! I'm sure you've been there too.

Wow!! That is beautiful. I haven't seen anything shaped like that either. It looks like a variation of a Jenny Lind trunk. Great work on it!

Superb trunk Marvin. Excellent work on the refinish as well. Almost feels like a prototype for the evolving Jenny Lind....

Thanks jscott, kyhome, and trunkman! I appreciate the comments. I think it was probably an early experiment or prototype for the "Jenny Lind" style trunks. I've kept this one because it is different.

Marvin, I can't say that I blame you for wanting to hang on to this one. I believe I'd be keeping this one as well!!
