This style of duck is an icon of Archimede Seguso. Made in the 1950s in Murano, Italy. These big, beautiful Murano ducks were created using Massello technique in orange and cranberry colors.

Two beautiful birds DJ! There is a misconception however, that these pieces are "blown". Actually they're created using the Massello technique. It's a form of hot working where a glob of molten glass -hot from the furnace- is formed using movement (pulling, stretching) and tools to shape. Many of the animals and solid structures you see by Archimede Seguso, Licio Zanetti, Pino Signoretto, and others are made this way. Sommerso basically is taking a preformed glass mass -in this case the red duck- and "submerging" it into the yellow glass which is then completed using Massello. An example of the shorter bird is documented in Leslie Pina's book, "Archimede Seguso Mid-Mod Glass From Murano Lace & Stone, page 147. Great pieces!

You're welcome DJ. Part of what makes glass collecting so enjoyable, is learning about the various techniques used to create it.
