I recently inherited this canvas picture that belonged to my Grandmother. We know nothing about it. My mother remembers it from when she was young and that it might be from Germany ??? I can't quite make out the last name so I haven't been able to find anything on the internet. Someone help please !!! :)

      M. Hartnett = Maggie Hartnett

These are from circa 1960's and values range from 90-250 depending on topic. Research "maggie hartnett big eyed girls" or just "maggie hartnett big eyed" because there are boys also.

Maggie Hartnett was an artist in 1960's. Her art was featured in Hartnett Gallery in New Orleans, Louisiana -not much more to go on, as I have searched and this is all that came up.

This is a painting my maternal grandmother made. Probably around the 1950s. She called these big eyed children gamins. She was married to a Navy Captain named Charles Hartnett and had a gallery in the French Quarter of New Orleans. She divorced her husband in the late 50s or 60s and when she did she started signing her paintings Maggie rather than Maggie Hartnett. He was a very abusive husband. She originally ran away from home to study art in Europe even though her parents wanted her to go to business school. She did pretty well. She sold paintings to politicians, and some minor celebrities like Jack Nicklaus by the later part of her career as a painter. She was loved by many. Artist, actress, dancer, and beautiful soul.

She ran away to Spain, so it's possible she sold stuff in Europe also. Not sure when she started making gamins.

Amanda, I would love to hear more about your grandmother! My own grandma had a set of her little girl prints that have inspired me my entire life. I received the prints shortly before my 30th birthday. Now they hang in my art studio in New Orleans, where I moved after my own divorce. The little girl prints were always a loving nostalgic presence in my life, but after hearing some of your grandmother's history I'll be drawing inspiration from the badass artist herself.

My website madebyjulianne.com has links to get in touch if you have anything else you'd like to share.

amanda, i found two framed gamins prints in an alley way and that began my interest in maggie's art.

Amanda, I would love to bear more about your grandmother as well. I also have a painting she made which was from my grandmother. The story passed to me was that your grandmother for a short time lived with my grandmother. They lived near a nunery (convent I am guessing) and your grandmother would paint pictures of the nuns from my grandmother’s window. My grandmother passed 12 years ago and I inherited one of the pictures. It is one of my prized possessions as it was one of my grandmother’s as well. My grandmother was Cleo Bishop, her maiden name was Lolamough.
