Trunk is a cross slat ,round top trunk(Alligator Pattern on the embossed tin) , These popular lithographs were made by Kaufman & Strauss, 75 & 77 Duane st. Ny. The American Stationer,Business Directory has them at this address in 1887. Which could be good guess on age.I personally call this a 5 over 5 (5 Slats top 5 slats front) , There is some damage, that could be repaired .Those particular slat clamps would be harder to replace though,as you don't see that pattern to often .The other one you posted has a Floral pattern embossment(one of many), I call that a 5 over 4(5 slats top ,4 on the front).Thats my own system though. It is Ok to fall in love with them,we do that a lot here.Much luck with them ,they are wonderful restored,or refinished. As you can tell from the many past posts on this site.Welcome to CW thanks for sharing them.

Hi tmwhitaker, that's great that you saved the trunk from being thrown out. It's hard to believe that some people still think something like this is junk not worth keeping. And a lot of these trunks are missing the original tray so you were very lucky that it has that and the original lithographs. There were many American trunk companies that made this style trunk with the same hardware. Old parts and pieces can still be found or purchased for a restoration. Many printing companies made the lithographs for trunk makers and yours happen to be signed, which is even better. Many of these trunks are found without a maker's label or any other markings. I've researched trunks for many years so I can tell you that the alligator pattern embossed metal was patented in 1885. This style trunk is shown in old trunk catalogs from the mid 1880's through the 1910's, so they were made for many years. Hope you enjoy using your antique trunk!
