Not all regiments of the Imperial German army used the same style of sword as the Prussian 1889 Infantry Officer’s Sword that I posted last weekend. The Grand Duchy of Hesse was a constituent state of the German Empire and fielded four infantry regiments. Officers of those regiments carried this sword.

The slightly curved 32 inch blade is plain, with one fuller. The riccasso bears the back to back squirrels marking that the firm of Carl Eickhorn used from 1906-1921. I think the grips are black celluloid covered wood, but could be Bakelite. The grip is wrapped with a triple strand of brass wire. The guard, pommel and backstrap are made of a ferrous metal covered with gilding. There is a leather finger loop just inside the ornate pierced guard.

Chris, I'm going to take a bit of a break from CW. The days of being like a family seems to have "dis'd" & I'm getting bored with weeding thru 90-95% sh-t. I've got plenty of time, but not for what this has become. Think you probably understand. Besides, Jacky got a job on a boat going to the Med. for their season! I've really enjoyed your posts & hope you will mail me whenever you do another. This has nothing to do with what happened on CW because I still haven't understood what it was. Thanks for the pleasure your posts have given me. I will probably have to wean myself at 1st. My best & a bientot.
