I bought this item at auction. It was referred to as a "Slave Cradle" but all the information I have been able to find indicates it's more aptly referred to as a Field Cradle. I can't imagine slaves having access to anything this nicely crafted. The information I've found for others that look like this says it was made by Ford Johnson & Co., Michigan City, Patent Oct. 17th 1876. This one has no finish on it. The wood is weathered which adds to it's appearance to me. It must be quite rare as I've found very little info online. What do you think?
