This is some type of commeration for service signed and dated. It has other types of hand written words but I cannot read the language. I'm hoping someone with the knowledge could help me with this as to what it is exactly. The art appears to be by Belgain artist Maurice Langaskens. The entire piece is quite large and appears to be in it's original frame.

Hmmmm... The uniform is Belgian, and the scene is obviously war related, but The way I read it (and there are those who can translate far better than me) It seems to be a graduation certificate, school year 1918-1919, for St Gilles Municipal School #3, graduating third in his class. Maybe because it was the year the occupation ended and peace began (notice woman holding broken chains and figure sewing seeds of renewal) that this allegorical scene was chosen.

Just adding detail to your great work CHRISNP. It's a really interesting thing, no?

A lot of very useful information... Thank you. Can anyone read the signature in the last picture? Its ... "______ Uriche?" I can't make out the first name, and guessing the last name is signed Urich?

No idea on the signature Redsox,

I agree with vetraio50, this is a very interesting item.

The first name of the instructor looks like "Louis" to my eye.

To me it reads: Louis Maréchal. This was not a teacher but an alderman for education. St. Gilles is a suburb of Brussels.
