I received him when I was 6 months old. Still cherish him! Have a picture of that christmas of the two of us sitting in a chair together. I was not that much bigger than him. His eyes open and close with eyelashes. I slept with him for years. Algy was stuffed with new non-allergenic material. It looked like sawdust to me. It slowly leaked out by his tail and was stitched close. I assume that is where the tag was. I restuffed him with fiberfill and discovered his one arm was up and one leg was down. Never realized this as he had been limp for decades. Does anyone know any information on who made him or who sold him? He was purchased in Iowa.
We had one of these...I'm not sure if it's still around...
OMGoodness!! ALGY!!!!!! I LOVE my ALGY!!! My cousin got ALGY in 1962 -63. I was born in 1966. As a child I would take Algy from my cousin, finally stealing him for good in about 1980. I gave him to my daughter in 1986, but his body has been changed about 6 times now. I would LOVE to have Algy back!!! He was the 1st hypo-allergenic doll that the company made. I don't know the name of the company. My aunt's sister-in-law worked for the company and at one time they gave out about 500 Algy dolls. This was in NJ. Aaaaww.....Algy. :)
I recently purchased a vintage ALGY Bear at a local thrift store. It looked so unusual with the rubber face, I knew someone would want to adopt him!
The tag is still attached and states the name and manufactured by Ideal Toy Company. I also found a vintage advertisement for ALGY in Life Magazine, Nov. 26, 1951. http://tinyurl.com/algy-bear (dan@zfish.com)
I know this is an old post but, have to mention how very interesting this is to me. My father (who passed away when I was 7) gave me an Algy (I always spelled it Algie) Teddy Bear when I was a baby (Dec. 1954). He didn't look exactly like the one pictured above - smaller and the eyes did not open and close (actually were shut). It was my most treasured toy and I still have him today. I have searched the Internet for years looking for any info on this and any other bears like him. This is the first time I have found anything (other than a photo on Pinterest the other day with very little info). Thanks so much for posting this Lady-bee and also thanks to Dan Therrell for the link to the interesting ad.
BTW: If any of you have any more information on the bear or the manufacturer I would be very interested in seeing it. Thanks!
The bear was made by IDEAL toy company. I have 4 of them. My first one my Mother recovered. I have 3 brown and one pink. Much loved. I have had them for
60 years except for the pink one.I lost her at a store when I was 6, and found her again at a garage sale when I was 50, they sold her for 10 cents.I know she was the one that was lost. I was so grateful to get her back.
I have one of these, given to me in 1953, I think, in Wisconsin. He's stuffed with walnut shells and cotton batten, one eye doesn't work, but he's been loved by me and by my daughter.
